CAN GOOD INTERNET CONNECTIVITY HELP AFRICA’S PROGRESS

Internet connection or Broadband has the potential to contribute immensely to a country’s development. The internet is the basis for establishing any business or for the technological development of an organization or in the country. A well- developed internet connection civilizes the country and helps it to make its place in the world market. There are certainly many resources that are helping Africa in terms of its internet connection.

·         Africa is one country that still has a lot to achieve in terms of good internet Connectivity. Africa certainly lags behind other regions in terms of the proportion of internet users. Statistics reveal that there are 525 million internet users in Africa; although a large number in itself, it is particularly a small proportion of the population. The poorly developed internet connectivity in Africa has substantially reduced the number of internet users in the region. In recent years, Africa has emerged as the third-largest internet user in the world despite its slow connection speed. The development of broadband will definitely help in Africa’s future progress, and it should be made a main target by the government.

·         Recently, the concept of satellite-enabled broadband has been extended to the rural areas of South Africa. It is considered a better option as compared to the mobile internet connection in areas with low speed of connectivity and lack of infrastructure. The development of satellite connectivity in Africa has resulted in the growth of the GDP and the overall economy of the country.

·         The presence of cheap internet in Africaby various providers has encouraged people to try out broadband service without making a hole in their pocket. The VSAT internet service program in Africa aims at providing high- end internet services to people at affordable pricing. It has transformed the rate of internet use in Africa to some extent!

·         The Ku Band is the portion of the electromagnetic spectrum in the frequency range of 12- 18 GHz. It is generally used for satellite communication and also in NASA’s Tracking Data Relay Satellite. There are two high- power prints of the Ku Band in Africa, stretching from North Senegal to South Africa. It is used in the telecommunication industry, in data and governmental services, and in the Television industry.

·         The Internet Service Providers in Africa are readily working to improve infrastructure in low connective areas and making technological developments to upgrade both satellite and broadband connections in the state and help in Africa’s progress.

Hence, Africa needs a plan to develop its internet or broadband connectivity in order to achieve high levels of economic and social development. It is important for stepping a foot in the world economy and making a name for itself globally.
