20 Ways to Increase Laptop Battery Life

The most popular post from the past two months seems to be 10 Ways to Increase Android Phone Battery Life  and continuing the series we had a guest post via Facebook comments  25 Tips to Improve/Boost Android Phone Battery Life and here we are again from the series of battery life. And we are again with the Top 20 Ways to Increase Laptop Battery Life .

So here we go and to be honest this is the most time consuming post in the history of all written posts .

1. Hibernate or Sleep

When in Sleep mode it consumes a little bit of power to keep its system loaded to memory or the place where you last left can be defined as loaded to memory and the resource it uses to do it is RAM . And it quickly loads when you resume it .

But as in case of hibernate it uses slight power(Till the time computer gets off-Not kidding)  or no power and again resumes it from where you left .

So if you are not going to use your Laptop for some time(Some hours) it is advisable to prefer Hibernate but if it is few minutes then sleep is okay .

2.More or Less RAM

Depending on your work styles add more RAM because less RAM results in the use of Virtual Memory. And when it does that it uses the Hard Drive which indeed is less power efficient. But remember adding more RAM will use more energy so it is advisable to add more RAM only if you use programs that use high or heavy memory intensive programs which require usage of virtual memory .

3. Multitasking leads to Battery Sucking

When you are on battery make a point to concentrate on one task at a time. I usually say converted files , checked emails, listened to MP3 and at the same time doing all those creepy stuff to understand what actually sucked all my battery life . And the worst part with this is before your task is completed you are out of your battery. So make a point, do concentrate at one task at a point.

Try a little experiment – Just do one task at a time if you are on battery following some of the ways mentioned here and see the boost in your battery life.

4.Screensavers –The Silent Attackers

Avoid using screensavers or in short don’t use screensavers. Screensavers start playing after some time and it consumes your battery life so its good to turn it off .
Right click on the desktop– Personalize

 Now Click on Screen Saver

Now select None -Then okay and you are done .

5. Regular Defrag makes the ill run like a thrill

The faster a Hard drive works the less demand and consumption will be of virtual memory(Hard drive) and battery . So regular defragmentation makes the data arrangement in a effective way thus a hard drive works less if it has to access the data on the drive .

So in order to defragment the disk just type in Disk Defragmentation (Disk even works) as shown in the image below .

Click on Configure Schedule.

Set the schedule according to your convenience .

And while doing this just defrag it after you have set the schedule.

Remember- Never run the schedule when you are on battery. Trust me it takes more then you could ever imagine .

6. Updating Software’s and Drivers

This might sound like the man writing this post is off the mind but trust me updated software’s and drivers are actually designed for the effective and efficient performance . So for drivers you can manually have a look and some might even display some warning. But for software we have a awesome tool named PSI- Personal Software Inspector. It can update your all out of date software in one click.

7. CD/DVD Drives

A spinning CD or a DVD drives sucks battery even smoother than a cold butter on a hot pan. So say if you want to watch a movie prefer copying it to your drive and then watching it .

8. External USB drives

External USB drives like say a flash drive, external mouse, speakers or a phone could even drain your battery in no time . So if you are not using them it’s better to simply remove them.

9.Don’t Murder Sound-Use Earphone

Killing sound sounded cooler but murder seemed to be like a serial one sort of something. Don’t murder is a little kind deal . Just imagine without multimedia would you be just working on say word processors, PowerPoint its actually a sort of boring when you don’t have much of a work to do .
So all you need to do is have a earphone instead of listening sounds through speakers .That indeed is a effective way of preserving your battery.

10. Screen Brightness- Traitor

Haha the heading seems like of a short story. Imagine you did everything right to increase your battery life but what it results in is nothing . So just decrease brightness and this should be your first step mentioned
of all .  Just click on what looks like power button in red highlighted below in the image.

And click anyone of them from the black rectangle box .

At the bottom you will find the Screen Brightness adjuster. Just set anything you like .

14. Visual Effects

Adjust Visual effects for the best performance and you can do it in the following way . Type in adjust performance as shown below .

Say you step away from your system for some time and in the mean time your Laptop is still on this indeed will consume more power than being off . So just set the time like two minutes or any time that suites your convenience .

Remember say you are watching a movie so the display will not turn off because media players are designed in this way.

16.Disable Search Index

It’s always a good idea to disable search indexing in windows .

17. Disable Unnecessary programs on start up

When ever you switch your a machine on . All the programs like Utorrent , Internet Download Manager start and this even makes the start up time very slow . So all you need to do is disable them by typing msconfig and then choose which programs you actually want on startup .

18. Lower the graphics Use

Graphic card use the same power as the hard disk and also Screen Resolution also comes into play .Less screen resolution consumes less battery so just right click on the desktop – Screen Resolution and then move the slider down.
