Free Broadband for FG Airports, Universities, and Markets set to revolutionise connectivity

The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has given the green light to two contracts worth N24.20 billion, aimed at providing free Broadband internet access in 75 public locations across the country, including 20 airports, universities, and markets.

Communications and Digital Economy Minister, Professor Isa Ali Pantami, announced the decision following a meeting led by President Muhammadu Buhari at the State House in Abuja.

Prof. Pantami explained that President Buhari had approved two proposals from the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) regarding government-backed projects to provide internet connectivity at selected airports, higher education institutions, and markets in support of micro, small, and medium enterprises.

Both proposals are interconnected, with the first contract focusing on broadband provision at selected domestic and international airports. In the initial phase, 20 airports will be covered.

Each geopolitical zone will have approximately three airports included, with the government offering free broadband access to passengers travelling through these hubs.

The contracts, valued at around N24.20 billion, will see the NCC implementing the project, which is expected to take between four and five months to complete, with budgetary provisions in place.

In addition to these contracts, the cabinet has also approved two major construction projects: a Centre of Excellence for Environmental Restoration in Khana Council and a 100-bed specialist hospital in Ogoni, both situated in Rivers State.

Environment Minister Mohammed Abdullahi stated that the projects aim to enable efficient and cost-effective strategies for contamination management and environmental restoration while supporting the welfare of individuals affected by environmental damage resulting from years of oil exploitation and exploration.
