Longines stands as the official timekeeper of the Dubai World Cup

Longines served as the official timekeeper of the Dubai World Cup as the luxury watch company timed the races of Saturday’s Dubai World Cup. The nine race circuit served as the official end of the 2016 Dubai International flat-racing season, which brought together the world’s best jockeys and horses. The Dubai World cup race was won by Victor Espinoza on California Chrome while Andrea Atzeni won the Dubai Sheema Classic. The winning jockeys, trainers and owners of these two important races received Longines watches.

For those who do not know; The Dubai World Cup is a Thoroughbred horse race held annually since 1996 and contested at the Meydan Racecourse which in Arabic suggests a place where people congregate and compete, a sort of meeting point in the Emirate of Dubai, United Arab Emirates. The race is operated through the Emirates Racing Authority (ERA) whose Chairman is Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Minister of Presidential Affairs of the United Arab Emirates. It offers nine races, consisting of eight Thoroughbred contests and one Purebred Arabian contest.

The Dubai World Cup, the final race of Dubai World Cup night, was created in 1996 by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai who owns Darley Stud & Godolphin Racing, one of the world’s leading Thoroughbred breeding and racing operations.

Annually held on the last Saturday in March, the Dubai World Cup is part of the Dubai World Cup Night of races, and has carried a purse of USD ten million since 2010, making it the world’s richest horse race.

The official watch of the event was a model from the Longines Master Collection. The men’s chronograph features a refined silvered stamped barleycorn dial with a moon phase display. The transparent case back of its stainless steel case reveals the self-winding mechanical movement.
