Turn your Samsung S8 or S8+ into a desktop computer with the Samsung DeX

Samsung launched its new smartphones, the Galaxy S8 and S8+ yesterday, March 29. One of the curious accessories also launched is the Samsung Dex. The DeX is short for “desktop extension.”

Samsung DeX lets you connect your Galaxy S8/S8+ to a monitor, keyboard and mouse for a desktop experience powered by your phone. So you can turn any place into a workplace.

With Samsung DeX, users can easily display and edit data from their phone, making working from a smartphone faster and smarter.

When everything is connected and the DeX is plugged into a monitor, the phone stretches out its Android skin to look like a Windows-esque PC platform.

The phone’s browser, email, calendar, and other apps have been rejigged to fit the more spacious screen, but Samsung says it’s also getting Microsoft and Adobe to adapt their Office and Lightroom apps, respectively, to this environment.

Note that while your phone is docked, your phone is still a phone. Phone calls, text messages and settings are all accessible from the taskbar on your monitor.

The DeX station

Weighing at a mere 230g, the DeX station has a built-in fan and acts as a battery charger. It supports various ports such as ethernet, HDMI, USB 2.0 and USB Type-C.

The DeX only supports the Samsung 8/8+ for now.

Samsung has not announced the price and when the Samsung Dex will be available.
