Networking 101: Networking fundamentals for Beginners

COMPUTER NETWORK
A Computer network is a digital telecommunications network which allows nodes to share resources. In computer networks, computing devices exchange data with each other using connections between nodes. These data links are established over cable media such as wires or optic cables, or wireless media such as Wi-Fi [1]

LAN - Local Area Network
A local area network is a computer network that interconnects computers within a limited area such as a residence, school, laboratory, university campus or office building. Computers and Devices that are connected to a central connecting device like HUB, Switches and Routers.

Devices to Make up LANs


  • Desktop Computers
  • Laptops
  • Smartphones
  • Tablets (iPads)
  • Network Hub
  • Switches
  • Routers

Host Devices
Devices that are connected to a Network and has an IP address. IP addresses are used to send data and receive data in a Network.

Ethernet Cables 
These are made of copper wires, another way to transmit data to a network.
