How to Start Your Own IT Consulting Business: What You Really Need to Get Started

Businesses rely on IT consultants to make informed decisions for them in a variety of ways. For example, consultants can solve network problems, improve applications, or teach employees new skills. There’s no degree required, so if you have expertise in internet technology you could start your own Consulting Business. Best of all? Consulting is one of only a few home-based businesses you can start with limited funds, and yet still go on to earn a six figure income.

Step 1: Set Up Your Home Office

Before you can begin seeking clients, you must have a work space set up. You’ll want a dedicated office, or at least a quiet area where you can keep a desk, connect to the Internet, dedicated Phone line, along with a fax machine or scanner.

To keep costs low, look for deals on both your Internet and phone services. Many companies offer bundle deals, such as CenturyLink Internet and home phone plans. By bundling these services, you save on both. You may be thinking, “But, I have a cell phone.” Unless that cell phone is used solely for business, it shouldn’t be used as your work phone. A dedicated phone line looks more professional to clients, and you’ll know the calls coming in are related to the services you’re providing, so it won’t be peculiar if you answer in a professional manner each time it rings.

Step 2: Build a Website

You need a website. You’re an IT professional, so this shouldn’t be a problem for you. Design a website that’s informative, but simple. The Startup Mag recommends that you “stick to the rules of a great website. For example, make sure you have easy to use navigation and make the most of white space. Make it simple for your customers to find what they’re looking for, and your site will help your success.”

Step 3: Target Your Local Market

What are businesses in your area lacking? This is where you should apply your focus. Have you noticed that local businesses aren’t leveraging online services, such as cloud technology? Cloud computing is quickly replacing traditional hard-drives, but some businesses have been slow to embrace the technology. By researching your local markets, you’ll be better prepared to target them.

Once you’ve determined which services are most in-demand, you’ll need to make a list of reasons your local market needs these services. If a business hasn’t already backed up their data to the cloud, it’s likely they don’t know the benefits of the cloud. It’s up to you to research these benefits, formulate a pitch, and use it to target your local market.

Basically, make a list of the services you believe are most valuable. And, next to each service make a list of its benefits. Memorize these benefits, and be ready to explain them at a moment’s notice. This is a basic sales pitch.

Step 4: Build Your Authority

Before you hit the pavement, there’s a few things Start My Consulting Business recommends. First, you should establish authority by blogging about IT and commenting on IT forums. The people who read these posts may end up your clients, but even if they don’t, you’re building your authority as an expert. Finally, make sure your website is search engine optimized, and includes giveaways and coupons to potential new clients.

Step 5: Hit the Pavement and Get New Customers

Once you’ve established a web presence, you’re ready to reach out to local businesses. Target any business that uses computers or the Internet, and make them want you by pitching them services they don’t already have (or, can get cheaper through you). You can try cold calling or physically visiting establishments. If you take the physical approach, butter up receptionists and CEOs with baked goods and other treats.
