If you have been using remanufactured or compatible versions of the Canon 057 or 057H toner cartridges in your i-SENSYS laser printer, you will probably have seen the following message…
“Cannot print. A non-Canon or counterfeit cartridge may be in use.”
Whilst you can navigate past this message on many of the affected printer, the additional button presses get boring, pretty quickly, and you may want to stop the “Cartridge communication error” appearing entirely. Thankfully, this is entirely possible and only takes a few seconds.
How do I prevent this message?
You can turn off ‘Genuine Mode directly from your Canon printer, and don’t even need an attached PC or laptop to do so. Simply take the following steps from the ‘Home’ page of your printer…
- Select the “Menu” option from the ‘Home’ screen.
- Now select “Management Settings” from the options presented.
- From here, press “Device Management” on the new page.
- Select “Canon Genuine Mode” now.
- Finally, change the selected option from “On” to “Off”, completing the process.
After you close “Canon Genuine Mode”, remove and reinstall the toner cartridge, there is then a prompt “Non Canon Cartridge is possibly inserted” displayed on the printer. Just press the “OK” key and you can continue printing, trouble-free.

Many modern colour and monochromatic Canon laser printer now have the ‘Genuine Mode’ feature, but we have personally confirmed that the steps above are correct for the following printers that take remanufactured or compatible Canon 057 or 057H cartridges…
