The Facebook-owned platform Instagram has long been the main tool influencers have used to carve out a career online. Many parents even use it to promote their children’s modeling careers when the kids are too young to join the platform themselves. However, there is a dark and dangerous underbelly to this practice that was exposed this week in a pair of blockbuster reports from The New York Times and the Wall Street Journal. According to these reports, many of these young girls are being followed by adult men who are paying for content, including exclusive chats and even items of clothing.

According to the Times’ investigation, many of these men don’t even try to hide the sick reasons why they’re following young Instagram influencers. And while some parents may be complicit in this exploitation to make money, many others have tried to block their children’s adult followers. However, Facebook limits the ability of parents to block users if they’ve already blocked too many followers’ accounts in a day.

“I remember being told, like, I’ve reached my limit,” a mother of two girls told The New York Times. “Like what? I reached my limit of pedophiles for today. OK, great.”

Facebook is also reportedly well aware of the problem, but hasn’t invested enough into stopping it.

“You hear, ‘I reported this account, it was harassing my daughter, why is he back?’” a former Facebook employee said. “There are not enough people, resources and systems to tackle all of it.”

The details of these reports are truly disgusting, and hopefully they cause enough outcry to force Facebook to crack down in a meaningful way.
