When it comes to Facebook’s business model, our data is the currency. That’s why the company has fought so hard to make sure it can continue transferring user info from Europe to the United States despite fierce pushback from European regulators. However, European users scored a major privacy win this week when Facebook announced it will now start seeking user consent before allowing businesses to target advertising using their data.

In January, regulators ordered Facebook to reassess how it used data to target ads, and the company pushed back at first. However, this week’s sudden reversal indicates that it may have been backed into a corner. While a big win for user privacy, this change could be devastating for the company and its advertisers, which is why it went to great lengths to reassure them that targeted ads will still work in Europe moving forward.

“Today, we are announcing our intention to change the legal basis that we use to process certain data for behavioral advertising for people in the EU,” Meta said in a blog post. “There is no immediate impact to our services in the region. Once this change is in place, advertisers will still be able to run personalized advertising campaigns to reach potential customers and grow their businesses.”

It’s unfortunate it took so long for Facebook to give European users this consent option, but at least now they will finally have more control over how their data is used.
