For a year, Facebook has been repeatedly slammed for collecting sensitive medical information from hospital networks. And this week, Facebook is facing yet another of these data-related scandals as a report from The Markup has revealed that suicide hotline websites have quietly been sending Facebook sensitive visitor information.

The data, transferred through the Meta Pixel tool, can include whether a user clicked a button to dial a mental health emergency service. It can also include easily unscrambled information like users’ names and email addresses. Thankfully, many of these hotlines have since stopped using the Pixel tool. And now, experts are blaming Facebook for collecting far too much of our private info.

“Even if this is accidental still on the part of the developers, you shouldn’t still be able to fall into this trap,” said Jen King, a privacy expert at the Stanford Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence. “The time has long passed when you can use that excuse.”

She also added that while “the original use cases [for the Pixel] perhaps weren’t quite so invasive, or people weren’t using it so widely,” the social media giant is now “clearly grabbing way too much data.”

Facebook is never going to stop collecting our data. However, the company can and should face blowback from lawmakers and the public for snooping in our medical info.
