By now, most Facebook users understand that the company makes its revenue from controlling as much of our data as possible. However, in recent years, the social media giant has made it easier for users to download their data and port it to other platforms. In other words, if you’re sick of Facebook and want to delete your account, you don’t have to lose everything in the process. And this week, Facebook announced that in addition to photos and videos, users can now transfer posts and notes off the site.

While Facebook said that this process was handled with user privacy as a top priority, the company also wants lawmakers to step up and set the terms for how this kind of data transfer will work in the future.

“We designed this tool with privacy, security and utility in mind,” Facebook wrote in a blog post announcing the feature. “However, the ecosystem we are building to support data portability will not come to fruition without regulation that clarifies which data should be made portable and who is responsible for protecting data once it has been transferred.”

This is a relatively small step in the grand scale of things, but it’s encouraging that Facebook is letting users regain more control of their data regardless.
