Mark Zuckerberg Defends Facebook’s Privacy, Security Improvements

Facebook’s public perception has taken a serious hit over the past year. From data breaches to accusations of foreign interference in U.S. elections, the company has been rocked by scandal. As a result, Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg has been on the defensive for months. He continued his PR campaign this week by publishing a 3,300-word post touting the company’s improvements in privacy and security.

In his post, Zuckerberg outlined the various steps Facebook has taken to strengthen its security ahead of the 2018 midterm elections, including removing fake accounts, taking down posts that incite violence, allowing the public to see information about ad campaigns on Facebook and more.

However, much of what Zuckerberg said isn’t really news; instead, it’s more of a summary. As The Verge points out, his post doesn’t reveal much besides how hard Facebook is trying to fix itself. While it’s noble that Facebook is taking real steps to protect its users, Zuckerberg’s post also gives the impression that the problem has been handled. In reality, hackers and other bad actors are smaller, faster and nimbler entities that can respond to Facebook’s security changes with new tricks of their own. It’s a never-ending fight — and it’s not one that will ever allow Facebook to declare victory.
