IKEA Home Smart receives physical buttons

for multiple commands at the same time
IKEA will release Shortcut Buttons in February. These are physical buttons that users can use to connect multiple functions via the Home Smart app, such as switching off both the lights and the Symfonisk speakers. The buttons will cost 7 dollars in the US.

The Shortcut Buttons are square buttons where users can slide in pictures with icons to indicate the function. IKEA will deliver pictures with icons itself, such as with a bed or a lamp on it, but users can also draw these themselves.

A push of a button activates a scene, a series of commands for smart home applications. According to The Verge , users in the Home Smart app can indicate that a single press of a button must close blinds, turn off the music and dim the lighting. Buttons can also be linked, for example, to Spotify playlists at a certain volume.

Users can put the buttons down or attach them to the wall. They are intended as an alternative to operation with the app or smart speaker and allow, for example, guests in a house or children without a smartphone to operate devices. In addition, IKEA sees the buttons as a way to involve people without technical knowledge in smart home service.

IKEA is also working on facilitating device pairing via the Trådfri connection hub, but details about this will be provided by the company at a later stage.
