IBM has warned that some USB flash drives it shipped to its customers contain malicious software, calling on everyone to get rid of infected flash drives immediately.

“IBM has discovered that some USB flash drives containing the configuration tool shipped with the IBM Storwize V3500, V3700, and V5000 Gent 1 contain a file that has been infected with malicious software,” the company said in a report.

The IBM Storwize system has a serial number that starts with the following: 78D2 has not been infected with malware, and IBM Storwize storage systems and data stored on these systems are intact.

As for the impact of malware, the company said: “When you start the configuration tool from the USB flash drive, the tool copies itself to a temporary folder on the hard drive of desktop or laptop computers during normal operation.”

With this step, the malicious file with the configuration tool is copied to the following temporary folder: ” % TMP% \ initTool” for Windows, and “/ tmp / initTool” for Mac and Linux systems.

The company said it has taken all necessary measures to prevent the shipment of any new storage engine loaded with malicious software, and called users who used the infected devices to verify that their anti-virus programs have removed malicious software, after updating those programs.

As for malicious software, it is part of the Reconyc Trojan series, which targets personal computers in Russia and India, according to Kaspersky Lab ‘s e-security solutions.
