[How to ] Download video and other media on Linux (graphically)

Many Linux user who have migrated from windows must be missing a GUI Download Manager and  accelerator  like Internet Download Manager aka IDM. Using IDM one can very easily download videos and other medias from sites like YouTube.
In this post we are going to show how to download video and other medias in full graphical mode. ( I know many of you don’t like using command line).

We will need three things:

1.  Firefox  (Firefox come pre-installed in most of the Linux Based system)

2. FlashGot plugin on Firefox.

To install FlashGot plugin on Firefox, got to plugin section  and search for it.

 

 

 

3. Axel download accelerator. [optional, do this step if you wand accelerate your download speed ]

Axel is an ultra fast command line download manager. Don’t worry you will not have to use command line to use it.  It use multiple connection to accelerate the downloading speed.

To install Axel execute following command in the terminal:

On Debian system(e.g. Ubuntu): sudo apt-get install axel

On fedora based system: sudo yum install axel

In case if you want to download something using axel. Just execute: $axel
e.g:
axel https://dl.google.com/linux/direct/google-chrome-stable_current_i386.rpm

Now we are ready to download video and other media. Let us show it by downloading a video from YouTube.
Here are the step:

1. Open YouTube in Firefox and play the video you want to download.

2.Now Right click on the YouTube page and select FlashGot Media or CTRL+F7

Or alternatively you can click on a ‘video’ icon on the top right corner of Firefox :    

3. After above step a new window will appear :

Deselect the media format, type or quality that you don’t want to download , set the destination folder and click OK. For example here in above picture  select only video/x-flv type.
All done! Video will handled by default download manager of Firefox and will start downloading.

3.  If you have installed Axel and want to use it to accelerate your downloading speed,  right-click and got to FlashGot Option>More Option>FlashGot Media and select Axel as default.

 

Now, all download will be automatically handled by Axel.
