March | Special Days of the Year

March is the month that comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb. It’s no surprise to learn that the Anglo Saxons called March “Hlyda”, meaning “loud”, for all of the roaring winds and thunderous storms. And as the herald of Spring, it’s also no surprise to find out that the Romans named March after Mars, their god of war, because March was the month in which the military campaigning season got underway again after winter.

As the only month with three consecutive consonants in its English name, its fair to say that March is a pretty unique month. And its also a month full of pretty unique days. Did you know that March 13th is all about challenging superstitions Open An Umbrella Indoors Day? Or that March 20th is Snowman Burning Day? These two days and so many more make up the most interesting and unique days in March.

st March – World Compliment Day. What a day to start off the month. This day is a day about being positive and sowing the seeds of happiness. Make sure you hand out those heartfelt  compliments all day long.

nd March – Dr Seuss Day. March 2nd is the birthday of Theodor Seuss Geisel, or Dr. Seuss as he’s more commonly known, and therefore is a celebration of his huge collection of work. With work as early as 1937, reading Dr. Seuss is also a great way to celebrate Old Stuff Day on the 2nd of March!

rd March – What If Cats And Dogs Had Opposable Thumbs Day. This is a day about wondering the ‘what if?’ of this crazy question. Owners of polydactyl cats don’t have much to wonder about, however, because their cats tend to have extra digits on their paws they use as thumbs!

th March – Grammar Day. As an English Studies graduate, and a sometime writer, grammar is big thing to me. So today watch where you put that apostrophe, know the right ‘there’, and make sure you use the right colon.

th March – Absinthe Day. Absinthe is the king of all spirits, and on this day we hail to the King. Known in historical literature as la fée verte (the green fairy), this high-proof spirit originated in Switzerland.

th March – White Chocolate Cheesecake Day. A white chocolate cheesecake is the most heavenly desert that could possibly grace your tastebuds. Bake one or buy one, it doesn’t matter. So long as you eat one today all is balanced in the universe.

th March – Be Heard Day. This is a day that exists to celebrate entrepreneurs and small businesses by helping them be heard in the fast-paced world of modern business.

th March – Proof Reading Day. Proof reading, much like grammar, is something that can be very important in life. Whether you’re in school, college, university, or even if you work in an office, proof reading can be the difference between mediocrity and excellence.

th March – Get Over It Day. This day falls between Valentine’s Day and April Fool’s Day, and is all is about letting go of the things you didn’t get. Whether it’s a job you didn’t get, or if you got shot down asking somebody out, just let go of it.

th March – Day of Awesome. A day for being awesome and being awed by the awesome that surrounds us all. A great way to celebrate this day is by playing some Mario, as Mario is awesome and today is also Mario Day!

th March – World Plumbing Day. Plumbing spans back in time to civilisations like Ancient Rome and Ancient Greece, and it’s often something we take for granted. But without plumbing we’d have no running water and sewage in the streets. Eww.

th March – Plant A Flower Day. Floral arrangements date back to as early as 2,500 BC in Egypt, where they were used as decoration and to honour both the dead and the living. After thousands of years people still pick flowers, so instead of picking one today plant one!

th March – Open An Umbrella Indoors Day. Invented in 2003 by Thomas Nibb, this is a day about breaking old superstitions and seeing how nothing bad comes of them. So open your umbrella indoors today – just make sure you don’t break anything!

th March – Potato Chip Day. Known as crisps in the U.K., these tasty little deep-fried potato slivers make up one third of the world’s savoury snack sales! So grab a bag and celebrate with a crunch!

th March – Brutus Day. Et tu Brute? Caeser’s last words before his bezzie Brutus delivered his killing blow. This day exists to remind us backstabbing thrives in the modern world of corporatism just as it did in the halls of Ancient Rome.

th March – Lips Appreciation Day. Everybody loves lips. They bring us smiles, laughter, and are one of the most sensitive parts of our body – harbouring more than a million nerve endings. A great way to celebrate Lip Appreciation Day is by kissing – it also burns calories!

th March – Submarine Day. First emerging onto the maritime scene in 17th Century England, submarines have advanced incredibly as time has progressed. From primitive submersible to nuclear-powered technological marvels, submarines will always have a place in the modern seas.

th March – Awkward Moments Day. Complete with its own mascot in the Awkward Turtle, this is a day about not feeling so awkward about those inevitably awkward moments. Take today to laugh it off instead of letting that awkward silence hang in the air.

th March – Chocolate Caramel Day. This is a holiday for every person out there with an incredibly sweet sweet-tooth. Chocolate and caramel, what more could you really wish for?

th March – Snowman Burning Day. First celebrated in 1971 at Lake Superior State University, this is a holiday all about welcoming the end of winter and the beginning of spring. Lake Superior is one of the coldest places in the US, so there’s always enough snow for a snowman!

st March – Common Courtesy Day. Today is a day to show off just how good your manners are. But more than that it is a great opportunity to see the joy simple manners bring to people.

nd March – As Young As You Feel Day. This is a day about proving age is just a number. Celebrate this day by doing something that people your age usually wouldn’t. I’m going to celebrate by running around pretending I’m a fighter jet.

rd March – Near Miss Day. This day commemorates March 23rd 1989, when an Apollo asteroid (1,000 foot in diameter) passed the Earth by a cosmically slim 500,000 miles. Its a great day to appreciate what we all have and how easily it can be taken away.

th March – Tuberculosis Day. Heralding back to March 24th 1852, Tuberculosis Day celebrates the same day a hundred years previously when Dr. Robert Koch announced he had been able to find the cause of the disease and therefore create a cure. This was the then-equivalent of a cure to cancer.

th March – Waffle Day. Today is the day to celebrate the arch-nemesis of the pancake, the glorious waffle. Celebrate by making yourself a batch – and if you make too many freeze them and then put them in the toaster another day!

th March – Make Up Your Own Holiday Day. This holiday is all about you – yes you! I can’t tell you how to celebrate because its up to you to make your own holiday and decide how to celebrate it!

th March – Spanish Paella Day. The national dish of Spain, paella is a casserole dish usually made from rice, meat, fish and a lovely sauce. Although traditionally cooked on a beach with fresh-caught ingredients, paella’s easy to cook at home so go ahead and make yourself one!

th March – Something On A Stick Day. This is one of my favourite days altogether. For me it heralds the season of the barbecue, and with it comes flame-grilled chicken on a stick. What’s your favourite food on a stick?

th March – Niagara Falls Runs Dry Day. On this day in 1848 ice blockages caused rivers to run dry, leading to the 3,160 tonnes of water that flows through Niagara Falls a second to come to a complete halt.

th March – Take A Walk In The Park Day. A great day to stretch your legs and get some fresh air. If the weather holds up why not even go out and have a picnic.

st March – Crayola Crayon Day. At over 100 years old, Crayola crayons will probably have been a staple of your childhood entertainment. Celebrate in style and grab some crayons and a colouring book – but take extra care to stay in the lines!

Please check back next month for the special days in April!
