For the Galaxy S25, Samsung is anticipating an Exynos 2500 as powerful as the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4

Samsung could capitalize on the new ARM Cortex-X5 cores and an architecture change not yet fully mastered by Qualcomm to design an Exynos 2500 that would rival the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4.

Historically, Samsung’s high-end Exynos chips have always lagged behind Qualcomm’s Snapdragon counterparts. The performance gap between the SoCs is particularly concerning given that the South Korean manufacturer has made it a habit to equip certain Galaxy S models with both Exynos and Snapdragon depending on the regions. This will once again be the case for the Galaxy S25.

A problem for the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4?

However, for 2025, Samsung appears confident in its ability to design an Exynos 2500 chip that matches the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4. Leaker Revegnus reveals that internally, it is believed that the next premium SoC “will not lag behind its rival in terms of quality.”

The source specifies that it is unclear whether Samsung’s optimism stems from excellent performance of the Exynos 2500 or rather from a Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 that may not be as good as expected.

As a reminder, Qualcomm is set to undergo a significant change starting with its next generation of chips. The chipmaker will replace the ARM Cortex cores it has been using so far with Nuvia’s Oryon cores, a newcomer to the semiconductor market, which Qualcomm acquired in 2021. In 2022, ARM was suing Qualcomm and Nuvia for license violations.

An Exynos 2500 boosted with Cortex-X5

Meanwhile, Samsung will integrate the new ARM Cortex-X5 cores into its Exynos 2500, which promise a significant performance boost. The chip will be manufactured using a 3nm process, similar to the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4. This will be a first for both Samsung and Qualcomm.

This isn’t the first time Samsung has claimed to be on par with Qualcomm in terms of performance in recent years. Ultimately, benchmarks have never proven them right, although Exynos chips perform rather well in terms of energy efficiency. Therefore, it is prudent to remain cautious about the actual capabilities of the Exynos 2500 until it has been seen in action.
