Best guide to activate eSIM on Google Fi Android and iPhone

eSIM, short for embedded SIM, is a technologically advanced form of SIM card that is built directly into devices such as smartphones, tablets, and wearables. Unlike physical SIM cards that require manual installation or switching, eSIMs are programmable and can be remotely activated by network operators. One major benefit of eSIM technology is its ability to provide users with the flexibility to switch between multiple mobile network operators without physically changing SIM cards. This means users can easily switch networks when traveling internationally or when seeking better service in different locations.

eSIMs eliminate the hassle of storing and handling physical SIM

What is an eSIM?

  • The embedded SIM, also known as the eSIM, is basically small, re-programmable built-in chip for your smartphone, tablet, or smartwatch. It’s used for similar purposes as what a physical SIM card does, but being carrier-independent it requires programming through software.
  • And with such handsets, converting to another provider is simpler still than buying and slotting in physical SIM card. Just get a configuration file and apply it to the device. This is typically what providers call an eSIM profile which they usually send you as a QR code to scan for download.

What are the benefits and disadvantage to using eSIM?

  • Theoretically, with eSIM, as many SIMs from multiple carriers as possible can be stored in your phone at once and switched among them. This allows you to change your plan of action within seconds on dozens of offerings — perfect when you’re roaming, for example, and need to grab yourself a short-term SIM from the country of your stay.
  • It is easy to test on multiple carriers as well. Many networks have free eSIM trial deals available for you to try the network out before signing up.

Which devices support eSIM?

  • While eSIM technology has been out there for awhile now, take-up to date is surprisingly slow amongst smartphone manufacturers. The reason for that is partially because most major international airlines did not adopt the new standard quickly enough. How to manually activate an eSIM on Android?

When you order an eSIM, your carrier will send you a QR code, which can be received either on their site or via an email. The specifics vary by carrier, but they usually have instructions online somewhere. Take a look at the Support section in Verizon, Vodafone UK or Airtel India. Or for carriers such as T-Mobile, there is an app you can download on your smartphone. Note again that this will only work if you have an unlocked phone and want to switch carriers.

Once you got the QR code from your service operator, simply follow these below instructions:

Android:

    1. Go to the Settings app, then tap on Connections or Network & Internet.
    2. Select Mobile Network or SIM Card.
    3. Tap onto Add mobile plan or you can Download SIM card.
    4. Follow the instructions which are displayed on your screen and scan the QR code when prompted.
    5. The setting labels may vary depending on your smartphone device brand and software implementation, but the general process across be the same.

How to manually activate an eSIM on iOS phones?

Activating an eSIM on your device is a quite straightforward process. You can request one by signing up for a new connection or even converting over from a physical SIM.

iOS:

    1. Open the Camera app.
    2. your phone’s camera at the QR code.
    3. Tap on the Cellular/mobile Plan Detected notification.
    4. Follow the instruction  on screen and confirm the addition.

Alternatively, you might be asked to activate your eSIM with a carrier/service provider apps:

    1. on the App Store download your carrier’s app.
    2. Use the app for purchase a cellular plan.
    3. then You’ll Add the Data Plan to your iPhone’s settings – see below how that works.

Transfer a physical SIM or eSIM on your previous iPhone to an eSIM on your newly iPhone after setup:

    1. On your new iPhone, go to Settings > Mobile Data > Add Data Plan. 
    2. Choose a carrier data plan to transfer from another iPhone. If you don’t get a list of numbers, tap Transfer From Another iPhones. This required both devices to have iOS 16 or later.
    3. Check for instructions on your previous Mobile iPhone to confirm the transfer. To confirm, tap Transfer or, if asked for a verification code, enter the code that’s displayed on your Mobile  iPhone.
    4. Wait for the mobile data plan to be activated on your new iPhone. Your previous SIM is deactivated when the mobile data plan on your new iPhone device is activated.
    5. On your new iPhone that says Finish Setting Up Your Network Provider’s Mobile Data Plan, tap it. You will be redirected to your services network provider web page to transfer your eSIM. If you need assistance, contact your network provider.

Convert a physical SIM to an Newly eSIM on the same iPhone device

We can convert a physical SIM to an eSIM on the same iPhone if your network/service provider supports it. Follow these below steps:

    1. On your Mobile iPhone, go to Settings > Mobile Data.
    2. Tap Convert to eSIM.
      If you can’t see to Convert the eSIM, your service provider doesn’t support this option. Contact your services provider to move your phone number from your physical SIM to an eSIM using eSIM Carrier Activation or by scanning a QR code.
    3. Tap Convert Mobile Data Plan.
    4. Tap Convert to eSIM.
    5. Wait for your eSIM to activate. Your old SIM card will be deactivated when the mobile data plan on your iPhone has been activated.
    6. Remove the physical SIM from your iPhone. Then, restart your iPhone.

Scan a QR code or use a network provider app

If your service provider doesn’t support eSIM Carrier Activation or eSIM Quick Transfer, you can scan a QR code from your network provider instead.

To activate your eSIM while setting up your iPhone:

    1. When you get to the Set Up Mobile Data screen, tap Use QR Code.
    2. Follow the onscreen instructions.

To activate your eSIM after you’ve set up your iPhone, contact your network provider to get a QR code. Then, follow these steps:

    1. Open the Camera app and scan your QR code.
    2. When the Mobile Data Plan Detected notification appears, tap it.
    3. Tap Continue, at the bottom of the screen.
    4. Tap Add Mobile Data Plan.

If you’re asked to enter a confirmation code to activate the eSIM, enter the number that your network provider gave you.

Enter the eSIM information manually if necessary

    1. Contact your network provider to get the eSIM details you need to enter.
    2. Go to Settings.
    3. Tap either Cellular or Mobile Data.
    4. Tap Add Mobile Data Plan.
    5. Tap Enter Details Manually, at the bottom of your iPhone screen.

Activate your Google Fi service

  • Important: To enter, you have to log in and use Google Fi in the U.S. (excluding territories), before you can claim . Then, you can use Google Fi abroad. We make allowances for those deployed overseas who work in the military or the state department. Check if the following condition applies to you to authenticate your government status)” if these conditions apply to you.
  • Verify if your phone is supported by Google Fi.

  • Devices can then only be utilized in conjunction with Google Fi if unlocked. Because if you ordered your phone from either Google Fi or Google’s store, then your phone should be unlocked anyway.
  • If you are not certain if your phone is unlocked, contact your network provider or place of purchase for help.

Set up Google Fi on iPhone!

Initiate activation on the Google Fi app

Important: You must start your iPhone device activation within the app. After you download it, tap the Google Fi app to open it.

  1. On your device, download the Google Fi app.
  2. The Google Fi app performs device and compatibility checks.
    • If both are compatible, tap Get started.
    • If either are incompatible, you get an error. In this case, you can order a physical SIM card or upgrade your iPhone.

Start your eSIM activation

You should have a the second device available for this process so that you can be able to use your iPhone to scan a QR code.

  1. On device, connect to a Wi-Fi network.
  2. On second device, like a computer or tablet, go to fi.google.com/ios/quicksetup.
  3. Sign into account of the user device those who you want to activate.
  4. On the Google Fi account:
    1. Open Settings.
    2. Select Cellular  Add Cellular Plans.
    3. With the iPhone you want to activate Google Fi on, scan the QR code.
    4. Follow the on-screen instructions.
    5. Tap Add Cellular Plan.
  5. Update your network settings:
    1. On the device activate, open Settings.
    2.  Tap Cellular  Cellular Data Network.
    3. Enter this text into your settings field:
      • Cellular Data APN: h2g2
      • LTE Setup APN: h2g2
      • MMS APN: service
        • MMSC: http://m.fi.goog/mms/wapenc
        • MMS Max Message size: 23456789
      • Optional: Personal Hotspot APN: h2g2-t
  6. To get service, you must complete all steps within the Google Fi app. The app walks you through:
    • Plan activation
    • Phone number setup
    • Your preferences

Make sure you sign in to your Google Fi account and not another Google Account. If you sign in to the wrong account, scan a new code:

  1. On your iPhone or iPad, open Settings.
  2. Tap Cellular  the plan you want to erase  Remove Cellular Plan.
  3. Delete the current eSIM from the device.
  4. Sign in to the correct account.
  5. Scan a new QR code.

If the QR code doesn’t work:

  1. Delete the current eSIM.
  2. Reload the QR code page.
  3. Scan the new QR code.

Set up Google Fi on Android Phone

Important: Before you initiate the process, you should fully charge your mobile phone battery. Keep your phone plugged in until you are done with the setup.

Set up Google Fi:

  1. On your new device, connect to a Wi-Fi network.
  2. If you’re new to Fi, sign up for Fi.
  3. Download the Google Fi app from fi.google.com/app.
  4. Sign in to the Fi app.
    • If you already have the Google Fi app, make sure you have the updated version on your device. Update your app:
      1. On your device, open the Play Store app .
      2. At the top right, tap the profile icon  and Manage apps & data  Updates available.
      3. On the list, find the Google Fi app .
      4. Tap Update.
        • If you find “Open” instead of “Update” next to the app, the app is already up to date.
  5. Activate your SIM:
    • Use an eSIM:
      • On Pixel 2 and up, the Google Fi app guides you through eSIM download.
      • For other devices, you can check if your phone model is eSIM compatible.
    • Get a physical SIM card:
      1. When you sign up, order a SIM card at no charge or buy a SIM card at a retail store.
      2. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions to:
  • Remove the SIM card from your current device.
  • Put the SIM card into a new device.
  1. To complete your setup, follow the app’s instructions.
    • If you have more than one Google Account on the phone, the Fi account must be the Administrator or owner account.
    • When you set up Fi, you can transfer your number to Google Fi.
    • If you want a new number, you can get it when you activate Fi. 
    • To find your number, go to the Account tab of the Fi app or website.
  2. Restart your Mobile phone.
    • You may get a request to install an update. When your phone installs the update and restarts, you can return to the app to continue the setup.
