What are the main types of DIY Hydroponics System

There are mainly hydroponic systems are:

1. Wick system

In the WIck system, absorbent material is required such as vermiculite which is used around the roots.

You can make a wick system in your house with the help of a bottle. Cut out the bottle fill it with water solution, and add absorbent material in it, now your wich system is ready.

2. NFT hydroponic system

In the NFT system, A thin film layer is used of water that flows through the system and provides the water around the roots.

The water circulates with the help of a pump and is collected from the small tank or reservoir and given to the roots.

The plants are suspended above the channel, these channels can be made of PVC or metal pipes. and the root hanging into the water solution.

3. Deep water culture Systems

It is another type of hydroponic system. A nutrition-rich water solution is used as a source for the plant’s growth.

It is low maintenance method for growing plants inside the house. Unlike the other system, DWC does not need the soil or coconut cour, instead of it, a water solution is used.

The water pump is used to circulate the water. It is very suitable for lettuce, spinach, and herbs.

Materials Needed:

  • A container or reservoir (such as a plastic tote)
  • A lid with holes for net pots
  • Net pots (to hold your plants)
  • Growing medium (e.g., clay pebbles, rock wool, or hydro ton)
  • Air pump and air stones
  • Air tubing
  • Water pump
  • Air pump tubing
  • Hydroponic nutrient solution
  • pH testing kit
  • pH adjusting chemicals (pH up and pH down)

  • Thermometer

Step 1.

Prepare the container: You have to make a container for the hydroponic system. You can use PVC pipe and cut holes into it.

Cut the holes in the Lid: If you are using the box, create holes in the Lid to hold your pot.

Step 3.

Set Up the Water Pump: Place the pump and connect at the bottom of the container. The water pump will help you to circulate the water in the system.

Step 4.

Add the Air Stones: Attach the air store to the other end of the air tubing. Place the air stones in the container to oxygenate the nutrient solution.

Step 5.

Plant Your Seedlings: Place the seeds in the container and ensure the roots are in direct contact with nutrient solutions.

Step 6.

Regulate the temperature and humidity: temperature is one of the major factors that affect the growth of plants. Maintain the temperature around 65-75°F (18-24°C) for optimal plant growth.

Step 7.

Harvest and Enjoy.

Yellow leaves are due to the efficiency of nutrient solution. Provide the required nutrients to the roots of the plants.

2. pH imbalance
