What is EOBI?
EOBI stands for Employees’ Old-Age Benefits Institution (Government Institution). It is a social welfare organization in Pakistan that was established in 1976 under the EOBI Act 1976. The primary purpose of EOBI is to provide financial assistance and benefits to retired or elderly employees in industrial and commercial organizations. It aims to ensure a measure of financial security to retired employees by providing them with pensions and other benefits.
EOBI is funded through contributions made by both employees and their employers. A certain percentage of an employee’s salary is deducted as a contribution towards the EOBI fund, and the employer also contributes an equal amount. These contributions are then used to provide pensions, old-age benefits, survivor’s benefits, and other related benefits to eligible employees when they retire.
Monthly Contribution With Calculation Formula by Rules and Regulations
The formula for calculation of EOBI per month contribution is based on the current minimum wages declared by the Pakistan Federal or Provincial government. i.e for the year 2023-24 Rs.32,000/- has been declared as minimum wages by Federal Government. 6% (Rs.1,920/-) is the total contribution paid by the employer and employee in which 5% (Rs.1,600/-) to minimum wages will be paid by the employer and 1% (Rs.320/-) of minimum wages will be paid by the employee.
The institution is responsible for managing the funds, collecting contributions, and disbursing benefits to eligible retirees. EOBI plays a significant role in supporting retired employees and helping them to maintain a basic standard of living during their old age.
