Everton and Man Utd Big Winners of the Window?

Manchester United partially answered Erik ten Hag’s major concern by clawing back two goals against Forest. After being exposed defensively in the opening four minutes, Taiwo Awoniyi, Willy Boly and Casemiro all contributed goals back before halftime.

Here, we analyze who were the winners and losers on another epic Transfer Deadline Day, plus who has scored the greatest bargain of this window?

Nottingham Forest

Nottingham Forest are one of the more captivating English clubs who have never won the Premier League, boasting one of the longest and most interesting stories in football while winning two European Cups during their heyday in the 1970s.

Forest endured an up-and-down Championship season before reaching sixth and qualifying for Wembley’s play-off final, where Swansea City beat them over two legs to end any hope of automatic promotion.

Forest has made steady progress under first-year manager Erik ten Hag, winning four games already this year and drawing one draw. Unfortunately injuries, poor form and bad luck have taken their toll and currently sit fifth in the table; pushing towards a top-three finish.

Manchester United

Manchester United cruised past Chelsea 5-1 at Old Trafford to seal Champions League qualification and advance up the Premier League table, and move into third position. Casemiro, Christian Eriksen, Anthony Martial and Bruno Fernandes scored at Old Trafford while Chelsea’s wasteful openings proved costly as United’s team ran riot.

De Gea was on hand to stop several promising Chelsea opportunities, including Mykhailo Mudryk’s horrid miss early on, before United seized control in the second half. Lewis Hall and Mudryk both missed their targets for Chelsea while Joao Felix missed a late opportunity for United.

Erik ten Hag, coach of the home side, accomplished two of three objectives he set at the start of the season – including two objectives related to killing off games – however his lack of ability to secure victory may cause concern, with Joao Felix’s injury taking its toll and possibly leading him to reconsider how fit his defence may be.

Chelsea

An expensive move from Manchester United to Chelsea doesn’t guarantee success in difficult circumstances, as evidenced at Stamford Bridge when Mauricio Pochettino’s team struggled to break through a staunch Forest defence under Anthony Elanga’s watchful eye and never looked like overtaking their rivals.

Axel Disasi, Moises Caicedo, Romeo Lavia and Nicolas Jackson are newcomers to an otherwise young Chelsea side. While this squad could benefit from more experienced options at each position, these youngster could have been added sooner if given more playing experience at Chelsea.

An error from Chelsea allowed Elanga to enter the box, where his shot hit Robert Sanchez directly in his palms and was eventually blocked off by Ederson.

Everton

Everton have never been relegated from the Premier League since its reformation in 1992. Their history of Old First Division titles is longstanding and, more recently, Everton have battled their way out of relegation trouble on several occasions; once against Wimbledon on a last day of season match in 1994 a goal in stoppage time saved them while, more recently in 2023 Abdoulaye Doucoure’s second half goal against Bournemouth prevented them dropping into Championship relegation trouble.

United won their 2-0 matchup at Goodison Park on Saturday, thanks to goals scored by Scott McTominay and Anthony Martial – lifting them three points clear of Newcastle, who still have an opportunity to catch them, while six more than Tottenham who currently lie sixth place – taking them beyond relegation danger only on goal difference with Tottenham visiting Newcastle later on Saturday afternoon.
