The Puri Jagannath Temple's history may be tracked back to ancient times. King Anantavarman Chodaganga Deva of the Eastern Ganga dynasty laid the temple's foundation in the 12th century. The temple was renovated and expanded multiple times over the years, resulting in the enormous building we see today. 

 significance of the temple is strongly steeped in Hindu mythology and traditions. Lord Jagannath, an avatar of Lord Vishnu, desired to be honoured among his siblings, Lord Balabhadra (Balarama) and Devi Subhadra, according to one common narrative. The Puri Jagannath Temple is an outstanding representation of the Kalinga architectural design, distinguished by pyramid-shaped towers or spires known as 'Shikharas.' The main Shikhara of the temple rises to a height of roughly 58 metres (190 feet), making it one of India's tallest temples. 

The temple complex is about 400,000 square feet in size and is surrounded by a 20-foot high defensive wall. The primary entry point, known as the Singhadwara or Lion's Gate, is protected by two massive stone lions that have become the temple's distinctive icons.

The Gods :- 

The most renowned and significant festival celebrated in the Puri Jagannath Temple is the Rath Yatra, or Chariot celebration. It usually takes place in June or July. The idols are being carried out of the temple and placed on beautifully decorated chariots, which are then pulled by hundreds of thousands of pilgrims through the streets of Puri throughout this great celebration.

The three chariots used during the Rath Yatra are distinct in size and colour :

   Nandighosa: Lord Jagannath's huge chariot, which stands roughly 45 feet tall, appears in yellow and crimson.

   1. Taladhwaja: Lord Balabhadra's chariot, coloured in blue and crimson, stands roughly 44 feet tall.

   3. Darpadalana: Goddess Subhadra owns the smallest of the three chariots, which is decorated in yellow and black and stands around 43 feet tall.

The Rath Yatra attracts a large number of devotees who travel long distances to see and take part in this religious event. Pulling the chariots in the Rath Yatra is thought to cleanse the soul and grant blessings and good luck.

The Puri Jagannath Temple adheres to a stringent set of rules and rituals that have been passed along through generations. The rituals are carried out by specifically selected priests from the temple's servitor individuals. The 'Naba Kalebara,' a rare event that occurs once every 12 to 19 years, is one of the temple's interesting protocols. During this ceremony, the gods' wooden idols are substituted with new ones crafted from specially selected woods. The process of discovering the holy trees and transforming them is closely followed and draws a lot of attention and dedication.
