Brother PocketJet 7 PJ763MFi-WK Review [All About It]

PocketJet 7 PJ763MFi-WK is a portable yet wonderful Thermal Printer. It is an updated version of PocketJet PJ673-K, which was launched way back in 2013. The size and portability are PocketJet's significant highlights. The printer is slightly wider than a piece of A4-size paper, making you wonder how it manages to Print. That's what this blog is all about; we will go over the printer's overall design and specs, features, and performance.

Design and Features

If you are looking for the smallest and most portable compact printer, PockJet PJ673MFi-WK would be the perfect option. Hands down, the printers from the PocketJet 7 series are the most portable mobile printers we have come across. The printer's dimensions are 1.2x10x2.2 inches, and weigh less than 2 pounds. Besides the size and portability, another highlighting feature of thermal printers is that they don't need ink, so you don't have to worry about running out of ink. The PJ673MFi-WK is the only thermal printer that can print up to legal-size pages, but it can only print black and white documents.

The Printer supports three types of thermal media: cut sheets, perforated rolls, and fanfold. All three are available in letter, legal, A4, continuous, and custom sizes. You must load cut sheets manually, one page at a time, as there is no input tray. The fanfold paper comprises multiple perforated sheets stacked to spread out as they are pulled into the printer. Paper rolls require one of a few adapters, or roll holders, to attach behind the printer and dispense paper.

To manually operate the printer, you must use the three buttons-Power, Bluetooth and Advanced Feed. On the printer's front, four status LEDs run down the bottom-left corner: Power, Status, Data, and Bluetooth. The printer doesn't even have adjustable paper guides for mounting different media sizes.

Accessories

The Workforce Kit that you will receive with the package contains the following items: an AC power supply, a Li-ion battery, a 3-foot cigarette lighter adapter, a 4-foot USB cable, a roll-up carrying case, fan-folded paper, access to software, special configuration, and the iOS-friendly Bluetooth which was missing from the PocketJet PJ673-K. The package doesn't include a power adapter or USB cable; the complimentary pack of thermal paper that comes along with other models must be included in the package. The Li-ion battery comes wrapped separately. You must remove a plastic placeholder from the printer to install the Li-ion battery. On a single charge, the Li-ion battery can last up to 600 pages.

The Pocket Jet line of printers is sold to enterprises requiring in-vehicle printing, such as delivery trucks, police cars, and ambulances. The equipment offered by Brother is designed for mounting printers in vehicles. The mounting kits offered by Brother range from simple to elaborate telescoping models, armrests, and headset units, making it one of the best quintessential road printers. You won't find any drivers or software in the box, but you can easily download and install them from Brother's official site.

Connectivity Option

The PocketJet 7 series has eighteen models, three of which are PJ76MFi models. The "MFi" in the product name denotes that these three PocketJet variants can easily connect to Apple's mobile devices. The printer can easily be connected via USB or Bluetooth with Windows, Mac, and Android devices. You can print from any device using the Bluetooth connection, including a laptop, mobile, and tablet.

Sadly, the Wi-Fi connectivity option is missing from the printer. You must install the Brother iPrint&Scan app on your mobile device to pair it with the PJ763MFi-WK to print. If you don't want to use the optional power cord or battery pack, you can use a USB 3.0 cable to power the printer while it prints.

Print Speed and Quality

The unrivaled portability of the Brother PJ763MFI is due to thermal printing. It does not require ink cartridges or moving print heads. In many ways, it's similar to laser printing in many ways, but it uses special thermal paper instead of ink or toner. The money you save on ink will be spent on paper, which is more expensive. You must buy all your thermal paper in advance as it is not readily available at the corner store.

For ease, you can purchase several types of paper in pre-cut sheets or on perforated rolls. You need to feed one page at a time from the back, and the printer spits out the print from the front. The cut sheets need to be fed one at a time, and if you want to print multiple sheets, you have to use a roll or a stack of fanfold paper. Brother PJ763MFi-WK can print standard text documents at 4.4ppm. The printer churned out standard PDF, Excel, and PowerPoint text documents at an average speed of 3.3 ppm.

As far as thermal printing goes, the print quality is quite good. The resolution is very low, but the text is well-shaped, highly vivid, and has sharp, crisp edges. Solid-fill graphics and monochrome look good but can sometimes be more consistent. You may notice a distinct odor when you print more than a few pages at a time.

Conclusion

There is no shortage of portable thermal printers, but most are label and barcode printers. Only a few printers can print legal-size documents, so PJ763MFi-WK would be your sole option. But with portability, you get limited functionality, and it is far less capable than a portable inkjet printer.
