Sophisticated MATA Framework Strikes Eastern European Oil and Gas Companies

As part of a cyber espionage operation that took place between August 2022 and May 2023, over a dozen Eastern European organizations in the oil and gas and defense industries were targeted by attacks using an enhanced version of a sophisticated backdoor architecture dubbed MATA.

In a new comprehensive analysis released this week, Kaspersky stated that “the actors behind the attack used spear-phishing mails to target several victims, some of whom were infected with Windows executable malware by downloading files through an internet browser.”
