Key Highlights

Now that’s out of the way, lets get into it.

The DJ Controller: Hercules DJControl Starlight

If you’re new to DJing and seeking an introduction to DJ controllers and their functions, this article DJ Controller: Detailed Beginners Guide is a must-read. It will help you gain a solid understanding of everything you need to consider and DJ Controllers.

Now back to the Hercules Djcontrol Starlight!

Mixer and EQ Controls

When it comes to the Hercules Djcontrol Starlight, the first thing that caught my attention is its asymmetrical design. While some DJs may have reservations about this, it’s worth noting that this compact controller had to strike the right balance in terms of features due to its small size.

The controller features two mirror decks that adopt a compact mixer design. Although you won’t find the traditional 3 or 2 band EQ controls, the layout compensates by offering rotary volume faders and a knob to switch between HP/LP filter and low EQ mode.

Additionally, there’s a bass filter knob that allows for bass frequency removal—a handy technique for blending and mixing tracks. Considering the size of the controller, I believe Hercules has done an excellent job maximizing the available features.

When it comes to the crossfader, I must admit that I felt it worked exceptionally well. It smoothly transitions between tracks, allowing for seamless mixing. However, I did notice a minor drawback when attempting to scratch—the limited space can pose a slight challenge.

Performance Pads

The performance pads on each deck are quite interesting. These are not rubberized pads, they are more like buttons that provide a click when pressed. While this might be a deal breaker for some DJs, it’s not for me, it’s a minor detail that doesn’t significantly impact the overall experience. But it’s not about me, it’s about you!

The primary mode of the pads offers hot cue and auto loop functionalities, allowing for seamless track control. By using the shift button, you gain access to FX and sampler modes, expanding your creative possibilities.

The auto loop function is particularly impressive, with button 4 activating an 8-bar loop. You can easily reduce the loop size using the other buttons, with button 3 providing a 4 bar loop, button 2 reducing it to a 2 bar loop, and button 1 delivering a 1 bar loop.

In FX mode, the effects are activated by holding down the pads. Once you release the button, the effect turns off. It’s worth noting that buttons 1-3 control the effects, while the fourth button offers beat division options for the effects bank, ranging from 1 beat down to 1/2 beat. This gives you a lot of flexibility to add depth and texture to your mixes.

Jog Wheels

Moving on to the jog wheels, they are understandably small, measuring 6cm in width. Despite their size, I found them to be surprisingly sensitive and responsive.

With a vinyl mode that is be easily activated using a dedicated button, you can unleash your creativity and have a blast while performing. Personally, I find scratching with small jog wheels a bit challenging, but these ones do an admirable job considering their size.

You may observe that the pitch fader is positioned quite close to the jog wheel. Now, personally, I don’t consider it a major issue, but it’s important to be mindful of accidentally nudging it.

Unique LED Lights

The Hercules DJControl Starlight comes equipped with integrated LED underlighting, adding a touch of visual flair to your DJing experience. While some might view this feature as gimmicky, it has the potential to enhance the enjoyment for the intended audience. The LED lighting synchronizes with the music, pulsating in rhythm and bringing a captivating visual element to your performances. The Beat Flash and Beat Fade modes can be particularly useful for DJs who need assistance in staying in sync with the beat. I think the LED underlighting adds a pleasant ambience to the setup, creating a colourful scene.

Software Compatibility

When you purchase the Hercules DJControl Starlight, you receive Serato DJ Lite, which allows you to start mixing right out of the box. The controller is fully integrated and mapped for Serato DJ Lite, ensuring a seamless experience. And if you decide to upgrade, the controller is also compatible with Serato DJ Pro, offering even more features and possibilities.

Connectivity

In terms of connectivity options, the controller offers basic features. It comes with a single master output and a headphone output, both utilizing a standard 1/8″ stereo jack.

It’s important to note that the controller connects to your laptop via a Mini USB B connection, which might not be as widely compatible as a USB C connection. Keep this in mind when setting up your DJing environment.

Additionally, the controller doesn’t have a microphone input or provision for an external input connection. If you need these features, you may have to explore alternative options.

While it’s important to manage expectations, it’s worth mentioning that professional-level audio shouldn’t be expected from this controller. In my experience, I did notice some interference, but that’s not uncommon with stereo jacks. However, considering the price range and the overall value you’re getting, I believe it’s acceptable.

Design and Build Quality

Despite its plastic construction, the Hercules DJControl Starlight surprised me with its sturdiness. It feels solid and well-built, capable of withstanding the rigors of DJing. This is particularly crucial for a portable controller that you can easily slip into a backpack due to its compact dimensions.

Measuring approximately 34 cm x 10 cm (13.4″ x 3.9″) and weighing around 0.5 kg (1.1 lbs), the controller is highly portable. Its lightweight design doesn’t compromise on durability, making it a reliable companion for DJs on the move.

DJMonitor 32: Active Speakers

One aspect of the Hercules DJ Starter Kit that amazes me is the inclusion of the DJMonitor 32 active monitor speakers. At this price point, you get real value of investment, it’s awesome.

The speaker casings are constructed from medium-density fiberboard (MDF), which is 0.24 inches or 6 millimeters thick. They are equipped with 3-inch or 7.6-centimeter woofers. Despite their compact size, these speakers pack a punch. With an RMS output power of 2 x 15 watts and a peak power of 60 watts, they deliver impressive sound quality.

The frequency response of 60Hz – 20,000 Hz ensures that you have a wide range of frequencies at your disposal for mixing and learning. Ok, so the speakers don’t go below 60Hz, but they make up for it with a dual bass vent design. This enhances the depth and richness of the sound, providing a more even and powerful bass response. It also helps to reduce turbulence and distortion that can occur at high volumes or low frequencies.

As a beginner DJ, these speakers offer more than enough capability to get you started on your mixing journey.

DJ Headphone: Hercules HDP DJ M40.2

No DJ starter kit would be complete without a pair of headphones, and the Hercules HDP DJ M40.2 headphones are a valuable addition to this kit. These headphones are designed to provide optimal sound quality and comfort, making them perfect for prolonged use during your DJing sessions.

The closed-back ear-cup design of the HDP DJ M40.2 headphones offers good noise isolation. This design effectively blocks out ambient noise, allowing you to focus on your mix and monitor your tracks effectively in any environment. Additionally, the headphones feature swivel capabilities, allowing for easy one-ear monitoring—a crucial aspect for DJs. They also fold easily, making them highly portable and convenient for DJs on the go.

The wide and comfortable ear pads ensure that you can wear these headphones for extended periods without discomfort. As mentioned earlier, they use a standard 1/8″ (3.5mm) stereo jack for connectivity, ensuring compatibility with various devices.

While these headphones may not offer the high-end features found in more premium DJ headphones, their quality and affordability make them a solid component in the kit.
