Star Trek: Prodigy Has Found a New Home at Netflix

For the first time since Star Trek’s revival found itself a “permanent” streaming home in the U.S. on Paramount+ (formerly CBS All Access), a new season of Trek TV will launch on a rival platform with the news that the previously paused Star Trek: Prodigy is making its way to Netflix.Variety has the news that Netflix will now be the home of the Star Trek 3D CG animated series, which follows a group of young aliens as they discover what Starfleet is for the first time while piloting a prototype experimental ship with the holographic advice of Voyager’s Captain Janeway (the returning Kate Muglrew). Previously Paramount had abruptly reneged on a greenlight for season two of the show, unceremoniously pulling season one of Prodigy from streaming altogether, leaving the back half of the season unavailable to purchase physically or digitally in the U.S., or legally stream, for a period of several months.“Thank you to our incredible Star Trek: Prodigy fans, who championed not just a show, but a community that’s always been connected by the belief that we build a better future together,” executive producer Alex Kurtzman and co-showrunners Dan and Kevin Hageman said in an attributed statement provided via press release. “We set out to inspire you, but you inspired us. The team is still hard at work on the second season, and we can’t wait to share it with the amazing fans around the world.”“I’ve always held that the Star Trek fan base is among the strongest and most intelligent in the world,” added Mulgrew, who plays both the holographic Janeway as well as flesh-and-blood Admiral Janeway on the series. “They have shown their collective passion, and we’re happy to be able to celebrate Prodigy once again.”This is not the first time Star Trek has streamed on alternate platforms of course—before CBS All Access, and even after its launch stateside, around the world Trek has streamed through Netflix, Prime Video, and other services before the wider global rollout of what would eventually become Paramount+, including several of contemporary series such as Picard, Lower Decks, and Discovery. While Paramount certainly caused a few headaches in the process of bringing those shows in-house as its streaming platform broadened its availability, Prodigy’s season two debut will mark the first time that completely brand-new Star Trek will debut outside of Paramount’s streamer since Discovery began in late 2017.
