SAAB EV? The Emily GT Project

Tags: saab nevs jucer

Remember SAAB? They were the Tesla’s of the 1980s and 1990s. Every Solicitor, GP, Engineer and Architect had one (you needed to be smart to own one). They were the cutting end in driver technology, engine technology, design and occasionally they made a profit! Saab went bankrupt in 2013 but lived on through NEVS (National Electric Vehicle Sweden). NEVS upon SAAB’s bankruptcy bought most of the remain IP and I think the legacy too. I never thought I’d see a new Saab again, especially an electric one with a range of almost 1000 KM.

What’s the Emily GT made of?

Well, it’s kind of Chinese and incredibly Swedish. NEVS, is owned by Chinese Real-estate mega-corporation Evergrande. NEVS primary purpose is as a high-tech auto mobility company (self-driving vehicles). Evergrande is one of China’s biggest real-estate companies It’s actually a Koenigsegg under the hood. Koenigsegg is a Swedish manufacturer of (very, very, very) High Performance Sports Cars (I want one). Additionally it’s even more of a SAAB as it’s designed by Simon Padien, who designed the second generation SAAB 95.

Why can does it have almost 1000 Km range?

Originally NEVS had plans for an autonomous vehicle, an electric vehicle based on the old Saab 9-3. The company set up a partnership with Koenigsegg and Evergrande bought Protean Electric, a maker of in-wheel electric motors based out of the U.K. It’s a car that essentially too 10 years to engineer, this is the first actual working product I’ve seen that is truly SAAB. It’s fitted with not 1, not 2 and not 3, but 4 in hub electric motors (one for each wheel). Additionally is has enhanced torque vectoring which improves transaction (reduces energy waste). Additionally is had some very big batteries, achieving a claimed range of 948 Km WLTP standard.

This SAAB might never be…

NEVS unfortunately has fallen into hard times, Evergrande itself has had financial issues. Evergrande is no longer in the position to take the Emily to market. There are an estimated 5 prototypes, but there are no plans for production. Reported by Saab Planet; according to (NEVS CEO) Nina Selander’s statement, NEVS has sold some of its properties but will maintain the factory in order to rent it out. While there will be activities taking place in their premises, they will not be directly involved in those activities. NEVS will not be able to further develop their heart project PONS due to its cost, and the same team that received a notice is tasked with packaging the project for potential sale.

Can someone please save SAAB?

Yes, coming to the end of this article I’m realizing that the world needs SAAB (NEVS) back! Gå som katten kring het gröt! How is a Solicitor, GP, Engineer, Architect or me supposed to get from A to B?
