Huawei and Alibaba Seek Deepfake Approvals: What You Need to Know

Chinese tech giants Huawei and Alibaba are seeking approvals from China’s cyberspace regulator, the Cyberspace Administration of China (CAC), for their Deepfake Technology. The CAC has received approximately 110 applications for products that can produce deepfakes, following the rules set out in December 2022. Deepfakes are synthetic media created using AI, such as fake images, audio, or videos. They are made using a type of neural network called an autoencoder.

While deepfakes can have legitimate uses in art, entertainment, and advertising, they also pose significant risks, including blackmail and reputational harm. However, there are currently limited laws governing their use, making it difficult for law enforcement to take action. Deepfakes are only illegal if they violate existing laws, such as child pornography or defamation.

Huawei, Alibaba, and other Chinese tech firms, including Tencent, Baidu, and ByteDance, are seeking deepfake approvals to comply with CAC rules. Failure to obtain approval or mark deepfake content appropriately can result in fines and other penalties. These brands also seek approval to improve and release their deepfake technology to the market.

Deepfake technology has various applications beyond marketing and entertainment. It can be used for creating realistic special effects in movies and TV shows, as well as simulations for security training and testing. However, misuse of deepfake technology has led to concerns, with notable deepfakes of public figures like Morgan Freeman, Mark Zuckerberg, and Barack Obama circulating online.

In conclusion, the approvals being sought by Huawei, Alibaba, and other Chinese tech brands from the CAC demonstrate their commitment to complying with regulations and avoiding potential penalties. The use of deepfake technology, while offering innovative possibilities, also comes with significant risks, highlighting the need for appropriate regulations and public awareness.
