Sentient Vision Systems and Edge Autonomy Successfully Demonstrate AI-Enabled ViDAR Payload

Sentient Vision Systems and Edge Autonomy have recently completed live demonstrations of their collaborative project, showcasing the effectiveness of Sentient’s AI-enabled Vidar (Visual Detection and Ranging) payload. The demonstrations were carried out on Edge Autonomy’s VXE30 UAS (Uncrewed Aerial System), the latest iteration of their “Stalker” series.

The VXE30, a vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) solution, when combined with Sentient’s ViDAR, offers an exceptional passive, wide area search capability. This enhances its effectiveness in various maritime operations, allowing for accurate detection and location of people, objects, and vessels, even in challenging conditions and low visibility situations.

ViDAR, developed by Sentient, incorporates AI, computer vision, machine learning, and EO/IR sensors to detect objects that are difficult for the human eye or traditional radar systems to identify. It has been successfully deployed in intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance missions, maritime patrol, search and rescue operations, and border protection since 2015.

Sentient has evolved ViDAR into a compact, lightweight, and low power form suitable for small UAS like the VXE30. The integration of ViDAR onto the VXE30 expands its capabilities, allowing it to operate effectively and provide real-time situational awareness in contested environments around the world.

Joshua Stinson, Edge Autonomy’s Chief Growth Officer, highlights the significance of incorporating ViDAR into the VXE30, stating that the passive detection system enhances the UAS’s ability to remain undetected while carrying a powerful maritime detection sensor. This capability can greatly impact the success of missions.

The success of Sentient’s ViDAR technology, with over 4,500 systems deployed worldwide, reinforces its position as a leading AI-enabled sensor edge solution for wide area motion imagery detection.
