ISRO (Indian Space Research Organisation) recently shared a new video from the Chandrayaan 3 mission, showcasing the Pragyan rover navigating the lunar terrain. The video captures the rover’s movements as it traverses the lunar surface, closely monitored by the Vikram lander.

This video release comes as ISRO prepares for the harsh lunar night that awaits the mission at the Moon’s south pole, which is the landing site for Chandrayaan 3. The agency is concerned about temperatures dropping below -200 degrees Celsius, colder than what the Indian lunar mission is designed to tolerate.
The Pragyan rover operates under the guidance of commands issued from ISRO’s Mission Operations Complex (MOX) in Bengaluru. Although it cannot directly communicate with ground stations, it transmits signals to the lander, which can then relay the data to the Chandrayaan-2 orbiter. The orbiter, in turn, transmits the data to ISRO’s ground stations.
In addition to the video release, ISRO also reported that the Alpha Particle X-ray Spectroscope (APXS) onboard the rover successfully identified sulphur and other minor elements on the lunar terrain. This finding raises questions about the source of sulphur in the area and compels scientists to develop fresh explanations.
ISRO’s continued exploration of the Moon’s surface with the Chandrayaan 3 mission is expanding our understanding of lunar composition and characteristics.
