AI Cheating in Schools: A Trend Among Young People?

According to a recent report entitled “Back to School,” many young people are using artificial intelligence (AI) to cheat in their school assignments. The report surveyed approximately 1,000 respondents aged 15 to 24 and found that 54 percent of them admitted to using AI in a way they believed was not allowed. However, the boundaries of what constitutes cheating with AI remain unclear.

Ulrik Hoffman, CEO of the Youth Barometer, highlights that for some young people, it may not be obvious that using AI is considered cheating. He emphasizes that AI has various uses beyond academic assignments, such as providing cooking tips, exercise recommendations, or even helping with creative tasks like writing poetry or editing photos.

The report also reveals that 40 percent of students surveyed are unsure if their schools have established rules regarding the use of AI. This lack of clarity raises concerns about how schools will address these issues in the future.

Peter Karlberg, an education advisor at the Swedish National Agency for Education, suggests that instead of imposing strict regulations, teachers should review their teaching methods to address the use of AI. Drawing the line between legitimate assistance and cheating with AI is challenging, especially given the widespread integration of AI in young people’s lives.

Hoffman argues that a difference in generational attitudes may contribute to the debate on AI cheating. While using a mobile phone to obtain answers during a test is clearly seen as cheating, the line becomes blurred when it comes to using tools like spell checkers or AI programs to enhance the quality of homework assignments.

To address this issue, Hoffman encourages schools to collaborate with students in developing an AI policy. Recognizing that a national AI policy for school use may need to evolve over time, he suggests that schools be prepared to adapt and update their guidelines as the technology develops.

The report highlights the impact of Chat GPT, a text robot developed by OpenAI. Chat GPT has been used by young people to generate text for their assignments. OpenAI is continuously improving Chat GPT’s capabilities and is expected to launch a more advanced version in the near future.

In conclusion, the increasing use of AI among young people for academic purposes raises questions about the boundaries of cheating. Schools and educators need to proactively address this issue by establishing clear guidelines and engaging in discussions with students to navigate the ethical implications of AI use in education.
