A recent lawsuit has been filed against Vassar College, a prestigious institution in the Hudson Valley, accusing the school of systematic discrimination against women. The lawsuit, filed by five professors from the college, alleges that women at Vassar have been subjected to lower salaries and a lack of promotions compared to their male counterparts.

The plaintiffs, including professors from various departments such as English, History, Film, Physics, and Psychology, claim that Vassar has been privately underpaying its female professors while outwardly promoting gender equality. According to statistics provided in the lawsuit, male professors at Vassar make an average of $153,238, while women of the same level only earn an average of $139,322, resulting in a 10% pay gap.

This pay gap has reportedly worsened over time, starting at just over 7% in 2003. The professors assert that they have been working with the college for the past 15 years to address this issue, but have seen no progress. Frustrated by the college’s lack of action, the professors felt compelled to take legal action.

The attorney representing the five women, Kelly Dermody, expressed hope that the lawsuit would push Vassar College to live up to its public commitment to gender equality. However, the college has yet to make any public comment regarding the allegations.
