GalaxEye Space, a space tech startup incubated at IIT Madras, has launched a drone-based synthetic aperture radar (SAR) system as they gear up for their planned satellite launch in 2024. The Bengaluru-based startup aims to combine the capabilities of the drone-based SAR system with their imaging satellites to provide all-weather imaging data from space. This data can be valuable in sectors such as insurance and precision agriculture.

The CEO of GalaxEye, Suyash Singh, explained that they have been simultaneously working on both the satellite and the drone-based SAR for the past 18 months. The drone-based SAR serves as a technology demonstrator for the startup. Singh stated that the system has the potential to address various commercial and strategic applications.

The drone-based SAR developed by GalaxEye is capable of conducting all-weather imaging without being affected by atmospheric hindrances. This technology has been recognized by N Sudheer Kumar, director of the Capacity Building Office in ISRO, who highlighted the impressive capabilities demonstrated by GalaxEye within a short period of time.

GalaxEye Space, which emerged from IIT Madras, has made significant progress since its inception. Last year, the startup patented an advanced camera system called Drishti, which incorporates multiple sensors to produce accurate imagery. With this technology integrated into their satellite, GalaxEye aims to disrupt the earth observation industry by creating unique datasets.

GalaxEye has also secured funding support, having raised a $3.5 million seed round led by Speciale Invest and several prominent investors including Nithin Kamath, the founder of Zerodha, and Prashant Pitti, the CEO of EaseMyTrip.
