Sentator Nancy Binay Slams Travel Policy for Being Restrictive to Travelers and Inconclusive in Stopping Human Trafficking

Senator Nancy Binay expressed her disapproval of the new travel policy, stating that it is burdensome to travelers and does not effectively address the issue of Human Trafficking. Instead of imposing more documents and requirements on travelers, Binay suggested that technology should be utilized to enhance profiling and ensure the safety and convenience of passengers. She emphasized that immigration officials should cross-check information in their database and compare it to the claims of travelers if there are suspicions.

Binay proposed that the use of information technology should be maximized to accurately profile travelers. She also mentioned that stricter rules should only be imposed on travelers going to countries with no visa requirements and high incidents of human trafficking. The senator believes that technology can play a significant role in curbing human trafficking by utilizing analytics and facial recognition to identify high-risk individuals.

Starting September 3, additional documents would be required for self-funded travels, such as a confirmed roundtrip ticket, proof of accommodation, financial capacity, purpose of travel, proof of employment, and other equivalent documents. Binay criticized these additional requirements as coercive, restrictive, and redundant. She urged the Department of Justice and the Bureau of Immigration to assign well-trained immigration officers who can interpret data contextually and make informed decisions.

In conclusion, Binay stressed the need for trained professionals on the frontlines to treat every traveler with respect and sensitivity. She also called for mechanisms to address false positives and protect the rights of individuals.
