TADA: Creating Realistic and Expressive 3D Avatars from Text Descriptions

Researchers have developed a powerful method called Tada (Text to Animatable Digital Avatars) to convert verbal descriptions into visually pleasing and expressive 3D Avatars. This breakthrough addresses the limitations of existing techniques by creating avatars with striking geometry and realistic texturing, which can be animated using traditional graphics methods.

The key to TADA’s innovation lies in the enhancement of the SMPL-X body model, which includes a displacement layer and a texture map. This high-resolution form of SMPL-X captures finer textures and features, resulting in more detailed and comprehensive avatars. TADA also introduces a hierarchical rendering method and score distillation sampling (SDS) to ensure the creation of high-quality avatars.

To overcome the issues of geometry and texture misalignment, especially in the facial region, TADA utilizes latent embeddings and an alignment strategy. By employing multiple expressions during the optimization process, the facial expressions and semantics of the avatars remain consistent. This approach allows for realistic and organically aligned animation while maintaining the semantic integrity of the original SMPL-X model.

TADA’s capabilities extend beyond avatar production. The method enables the large-scale construction of digital characters suitable for animation and rendering. Additionally, TADA provides text-guided editing, empowering users with customization options.

Quantitative and qualitative evaluations have shown that TADA outperforms alternative methods. It enables the creation of avatars with exceptional quality, as well as text-guided editing for extensive customization. TADA’s contributions lie in hierarchical optimization, consistent alignment of geometry and texture, semantic consistency, and animation.
