Polish Opposition Party Uses AI to Generate Fake Clips in Election Ad

The largest Opposition Party in Poland, the centrist Civic Platform (PO), has stirred up controversy with an election campaign advertisement that combines real clips of the prime minister with fabricated ones created using artificial intelligence (AI). The video, released by PO, initially failed to disclose that some of the material was artificially generated, sparking criticism from commentators and experts.

The ad starts by referring to the ruling coalition as the “United Right” before presenting genuine footage of Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki alongside audio clips of a voice that resembles his, reading sections of leaked emails allegedly from the prime minister’s former chief of staff. While the government has admitted that the inbox was indeed hacked, it has raised doubts about the authenticity of certain leaked materials.

PO’s objective in juxtaposing Morawiecki’s public statements with the leaked emails was to demonstrate apparent tensions within the ruling coalition. However, the party faced backlash for not clearly indicating that the voice reading the quotes was AI-generated, sounding like the prime minister.

Experts and fact-checking websites have called for political parties to comply with the newly adopted EU regulation, the AI Act, which requires clear markings on any AI-generated content. Deputy Interior Minister Błażej Poboża also expressed concerns about the risks associated with the use of such tools in political campaigns.

PO defended its advertisement as a “very good idea,” arguing that it was unnecessary to disclose the use of AI since the emails were shown. However, in a subsequent ad, the party did include a warning in the social media post, but not in the video itself.

The use of AI-generated content in political advertising raises important questions about the potential for manipulation and misinformation. It highlights the need for transparency and ethical guidelines as AI technology becomes increasingly sophisticated.
