ChatGPT’s Performance Comparable to University Students in Various Subjects, Raises Plagiarism Concerns

Summary: ChatGPT, an AI language model, has demonstrated the ability to achieve similar or higher grades than university students when answering assessment questions in various disciplines, including computer science, political studies, engineering, and psychology. However, students outperformed ChatGPT in mathematics and economics. Despite its capabilities, 74% of surveyed students admitted they would use ChatGPT for their academic assignments. These findings, published in Scientific Reports, have raised concerns among educators who consider its use to be plagiarism.

The research conducted by Talal Rahwan and Yasir Zaki involved faculty members from New York University Abu Dhabi (NYUAD) providing three student submissions each for ten assessment questions in 32 different courses. ChatGPT was then tasked with generating answers to these questions, which were assessed alongside student-written responses. In 9 out of the 32 courses, ChatGPT achieved a similar or higher average grade compared to students. Notably, it significantly outperformed students in the “Introduction to Public Policy” course.

A survey conducted among 1,601 individuals from five countries (Brazil, India, Japan, the US, and the UK) revealed that 74% of students would utilize ChatGPT for their assignments. In contrast, educators underestimated the proportion of students who planned to use ChatGPT, and 70% of educators considered its use to be plagiarism.

Additionally, two AI detection tools, GPTZero and AI text classifier, misclassified ChatGPT’s generated answers as human-written in 32% and 49% of cases, respectively. These findings shed light on the potential use of AI tools in educational settings and raise questions about academic integrity and policy considerations.
