The Growing Carbon Footprint of AI on the Internet

As the internet has become increasingly complex and more people have connected to it, the Carbon Footprint of the web has steadily grown. Now, with the rise of generative AI, there are concerns that the energy consumption of AI technologies could push the web’s emissions to a tipping point.

With nearly 5 billion internet users, this increase in energy consumption could have a significant impact on the environment.

While it is difficult to calculate the exact carbon emissions of AI models like ChatGPT, there are signs that electricity usage is already increasing during the AI boom. Water usage by data centers, which is a rough proxy for electricity demand, has risen rapidly. Additionally, generative AI produces emissions through the construction of computer chips and data centers, training large language models, and the electricity required to use the end products.

The size and complexity of AI models are growing rapidly, with training datasets and models constantly expanding. Even if a single chatbot message uses a small amount of energy, the cumulative effect of using AI technologies extensively could lead to significant emissions. It is estimated that the deployment of AI bots could account for a substantial portion of the technology’s emissions in the future.

With Google Search already incorporating chatbot functionality, the power consumption of data centers is expected to increase further. Data centers’ electricity usage is predicted to more than double by 2030. This overall increase in energy consumption on the internet due to AI technologies is a cause for concern.

While improvements in the efficiency of data centers, computer chips, and software have helped mitigate the carbon footprint of the internet so far, the growing adoption of AI raises new challenges. Efforts to ensure the sustainability of AI technologies and mitigate their environmental impact will be crucial as the digital landscape continues to evolve.
