Alaska, known for its vast remote areas, is experiencing a significant transformation in internet connectivity thanks to the introduction of Starlink terminals. Starlink, a subsidiary of SpaceX, has been deploying thousands of low-orbit satellites since 2019, revolutionizing internet infrastructure globally.

The availability of Starlink internet in Alaska since late last year has exceeded expectations, with thousands of residents signing up for the service. Although the signal strength may diminish as more users compete for bandwidth, the addition of satellites by SpaceX has resulted in faster and more stable connections.

While satellite-delivered internet is considered inferior to fiber-optic connections in terms of speed and stability, Alaska’s telecommunications companies are making efforts to extend fiber-optic cables across rural areas. Federal investments, such as those from the bipartisan infrastructure act, are supporting the expansion of fiber-optic infrastructure in the region.

One driving factor behind the increased demand for Starlink is the recent cut in a subsea fiber cable caused by sea ice off Alaska’s northern coast. The fiber cable outage prompted many Alaskans to turn to Starlink for reliable and affordable internet access.

The Kuskokwim Corp., an Alaska Native corporation representing shareholders in remote villages along the Kuskokwim River, has taken steps to bridge the digital divide in their region. They have purchased Starlink systems for 450 households, with the corporation covering the installation costs and families paying a $90 monthly bill. The improved speeds provided by Starlink are described as “life-changing” for these communities.

Starlink’s success can be attributed to SpaceX’s ability to rapidly deploy satellites in low orbits. With a growing constellation of over 4,500 satellites, accounting for 53% of active units in orbit, Starlink has become a powerful tech disruptor. Compared to other satellite-based internet options and traditional telecom services in Alaska, Starlink is more accessible and cost-effective.

Although efforts are underway to extend fiber-optic infrastructure in rural Alaska, having access to both satellite and fiber internet sources ensures that communities remain connected even in the face of outages or disruptions. This choice is particularly significant for rural Alaskans who previously had limited or unreliable internet access.
