The demonstration featured a tech demo using Unreal Engine 5, showcasing a futuristic ramen shop owner named Jin in a Cyberpunk 2077-inspired world. Players could engage in conversation with Jin using a microphone, adding a new layer of NPC interaction not seen before in games. Despite some stilted dialogue and animations, the demonstration offered a promising glimpse into the future of gaming.

NVIDIA has since continued to refine the ACE demo and introduced NVIDIA NeMo SteerLM for developers. Unlike most AI language models (LLMs) that prioritize ideal responses without personality or emotion, SteerLM adds humanity to each AI character by training them to provide responses aligned with specific attributes, such as humor or creativity, to toxicity.

Developers using ACE can utilize various sliders to adjust these attributes and emotional traits, adding depth and realism to each NPC. Additionally, ACE allows developers to assign attributes to factions, ensuring that characters within a group share similar beliefs. These characters can adapt and change their behavior based on in-game events or player choices.

NVIDIA views the SteerLM technique as a means to transform polite chatbots into emotive characters, ultimately creating more immersive and engaging games. With ongoing breakthroughs on the horizon, NVIDIA anticipates further advancements in the ACE system that will continue to push the boundaries of AI-driven NPCs in gaming.
