A recent study conducted by researchers from Stanford University, Kaiser Permanente, Brighton Vision Center, the University of Colorado, and Vanderbilt Eye Institute reveals that ChatGPT, an AI-powered chatbot, provides accurate answers to questions about eye care. The study, published in Jama Network Open, compared the responses of ChatGPT to those of nine board-certified ophthalmologists in an online advice forum.

The researchers found that ChatGPT’s responses were in line with current medical guidance and did not significantly differ from human responses in terms of the presence of incorrect information, likelihood of causing harm, extent of harm, or agreement with perceived consensus in the medical community. A panel of eight ophthalmologists was able to identify ChatGPT’s responses in most cases when compared to answers provided by doctors. The panelists assessed human-vs.-chatbot responses with 61% accuracy.
Although ChatGPT’s responses tended to be longer, the researchers noted that the AI chatbot demonstrated the ability to generate coherent and correct answers to detailed and specialized questions in the field of ophthalmology. However, the authors of the study emphasized that ChatGPT should not replace ophthalmologists or physicians in general but can potentially augment their work and provide support for patient education under appropriate supervision.
The study highlights the need to assess the accuracy and possible harm of AI tools, like ChatGPT, as they are increasingly used by patients seeking medical advice online. As healthcare providers endorse the use of AI-enabled tools, it is crucial to ensure that the advice they provide is accurate and safe for patients.
