The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted Intense Rainfall activity over East India in the next three days. The region, including Sub-Himalayan West Bengal (SHWB), Sikkim, and Bihar, will experience widespread light to moderate rains, thunderstorms, and lightning, with isolated heavy to very heavy showers. The rain spell will peak in the next 48 hours, resulting in isolated extremely heavy downpours over Sikkim and SHWB on Wednesday and Bihar on Wednesday and Thursday.
The IMD has issued orange alerts, indicating the need to be prepared for rough conditions, for these subdivisions during extreme rainfall days. However, the advisory may be upgraded to a red warning, meaning action is needed to stay safe, depending on how the weather situation evolves.
Bihar’s northern districts of Kishanganj, Araria, Purnea, and Supaul, as well as SHWB’s Alipurduar, Jalpaiguri, and Cooch Behar, will experience extremely heavy rainfall. These wet conditions are influenced by the monsoon trough being north of its normal position and a cyclonic circulation over central Madhya Pradesh and neighboring areas.
East India has already recorded above-average precipitation this month, with Bihar and SHWB-Sikkim exceeding their individual averages by 12% and 14%, respectively, between August 1 and 22.
