Lymphatic Filariasis (LF), commonly known as elephantiasis or hathipaon, is a neglected tropical Disease that affects millions of people in India. The disease is caused by a mosquito-borne parasitic worm that disrupts the lymph system, causing severe swelling in the limbs and other body parts. Apart from the physical pain, those suffering from LF also face social stigma and loss of income.
India has been working towards Eliminating LF as a public health problem since the early 2000s. The country set a goal to achieve this by 2015, which was later extended to 2017. However, according to recent reports, over 23 million people in India still suffer from lifelong disability as a result of LF. The global target to eliminate the disease is now set for 2030.
Despite the challenges, India has stepped up its efforts to combat LF. The government conducts annual Mass Drug Administration (MDA) campaigns in high-burden districts, where affected individuals are given medication to prevent the spread of the disease. The combination of drugs used in the treatment includes Albendazole tablets, Ivermectin, and diethylcarbamazine citrate tablets.
In the past, due to lack of awareness, people in the affected villages turned to unconventional and often dangerous remedies such as snake oil massages and scorpion bites. These practices provided temporary relief but did not address the underlying cause of the disease. However, awareness campaigns led by patients themselves have started to change the narrative, encouraging people to seek proper medical treatment.
While India still has a long way to go in completely eliminating LF, the progress made so far is commendable. The government’s commitment to achieve the goal by 2027, three years earlier than the global target, is a positive step towards a future without elephantiasis.
