Google DeepMind Launches Visualising AI to Promote Diversity and Accurate Representation

Google DeepMind has unveiled Visualising AI, an initiative aimed at eliminating misleading representations of artificial intelligence (AI) in stock imagery and pop culture. The project involves collaborating with artists to create artworks that depict AI themes related to research, technologies, and real-world consequences. The goal is to address the lack of diversity and stereotypical portrayals often associated with AI.

In the past, AI has been commonly depicted through code streams, blue brains, or white robots with men in suits. By partnering with scientists, engineers, and ethicists from Google DeepMind, the artists behind Visualising AI aim to offer a fresh and inclusive perspective on AI.

All the artworks, including images and motion graphics, are available for free download. Since its launch, Visualising AI has engaged with 13 artists and created over 100 artworks, garnering over 100 million views and 800,000 downloads. These images have been utilized by media outlets, research organizations, and civil society organizations.

While Google DeepMind’s foray into imagery may seem unusual, the company has been exploring image-related tools. From the text-to-image diffusion model Imagen to the Muse text-to-image transformer model, Google has been experimenting with various image generation technologies. However, it faces competition from other market players like OpenAI, which is also working on its own image-generation tool.

Visualising AI not only expands Google DeepMind’s influence in the image market but also reflects a growing trend among big tech companies diversifying into different domains. Partnerships, such as Google’s collaboration with Adobe to integrate Firefly and Express into Bard, have become a popular strategy in the tech industry. These partnerships often have broader implications for the companies involved, allowing them to enter new industries and enhance their offerings.

As the demand for visual content continues to rise across diverse industries, the market size of worldwide stock images and videos is projected to reach $7.33 billion by 2028. Google DeepMind’s venture into providing images on platforms like Pexels and Unsplash paves the way for potential expansion into other image categories in the future.
