The Success of India’s Space Sector: Private Sector Involvement and Government Support

India’s space Sector has experienced remarkable growth and achievements in the past nine years, largely due to the involvement of the private sector and the constant support from the government. The Modi government has played the role of an ‘enabler’ by removing bottlenecks and providing the necessary resources for innovation and progress in the space sector.

One significant change has been the increased involvement of the private sector in assisting the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) in its quest for innovation. Before 2014, only 35 foreign satellites were launched by India, compared to 389 foreign satellites launched since the Modi government took charge. This increased collaboration with the private sector has not only earned India over Rs 3,300 crore but also accelerated the pace of launch missions.

The Modi government has also allocated a larger budget to the Department of Space, with the budgetary allocation increasing from Rs 5,615 crore in 2013-14 to Rs 12,543.91 crore in 2023-24. This increase in funding has enabled ISRO to focus on various aspects, including the promotion of private enterprises, independent space activities, and research and development work.

The government’s efforts have led to the growth of space start-ups, with the number increasing from just a few before 2014 to 140 as of July 2023. Moreover, the government has established the Indian Space Association (ISpA) and IN-SPACe to ensure greater private participation in space activities. Additionally, the formation of New Space India Limited has facilitated the commercial exploitation of products and services from the Indian space programme.

Some notable achievements during this period include the successful launch of AstroSat, India’s first dedicated Space Astronomy Observatory, and the ongoing development of Aditya-L1, the first observatory-class space-based solar mission from India. ISRO has also made progress in developing the Small Satellite Launch Vehicle (SSLV) and conducting the first experimental mission of the Scramjet Engine.

Moving forward, India’s space sector aims to achieve even greater milestones. The Gaganyaan Mission, which aims to send a three-member crew to space for three days, is one such ambitious project. ISRO has developed a spacecraft for this mission, and the project is being executed by the Human Space Flight Centre (HSFC).

The involvement of the private sector, increased budgetary allocation, and unwavering government support have been key factors in India’s space sector success. With the recent Chandrayaan-3 landing and the country’s aspiration for more significant achievements in space exploration, India’s space sector is poised for continued growth.
