Created using the technology from OpenAI, the chatbot will help guide policymakers on parenting issues and enable advertisers to target their campaigns more effectively. Although initially intended as a research tool, MumsGPT may be made available to the public in the future. The service has already been used by Mumsnet to collaborate with skincare brands to study skin conditions experienced during menopause.
Mumsnet, primarily owned by founder Justine Roberts, currently utilizes a network of 20,000 users for focus panels and product testing. The platform’s research and surveys also influence its political arm, which advocates on childcare and related issues. Analyzing posts on Mumsnet, researchers have found that users tend to search for holidays shortly after returning from one, contrary to conventional wisdom.
Data from online forums and social media has proven valuable for companies developing AI chatbots, leading to tensions over access to this information. Reddit, for example, has announced plans to charge companies for data access, while Elon Musk has criticized OpenAI for underpaying for access to Twitter’s data. Mumsnet’s chatbot, however, relies solely on data from its own website, avoiding issues such as chatbots creating inaccurate information or perpetuating gender biases.
According to Mumsnet’s CEO, Justine Roberts, the power of AI tools lies in the quality and provenance of the data they leverage. MumsGPT, with its extensive dataset and user insights, aims to distinguish itself from other models in the industry.
