Artificial Intelligence Matches Human Creativity, Study Finds

A recent study conducted by the University of Montana has revealed that artificial intelligence (AI) has the potential to match the creative abilities of the top 1% of humans on a test for measuring creativity. Led by Dr. Erik Guzik, the research team used the Torrance Tests of Creative Thinking (TTCT), a widely recognized tool for assessing Human Creativity.

In the study, the researchers used ChatGPT, an AI application powered by the GPT-4 engine, to generate responses. They compared these responses to those of 2,700 college students who took the TTCT in 2016. The AI performed exceptionally well, achieving a top percentile ranking in fluency (generating numerous ideas) and originality (producing new concepts). It also ranked in the 97th percentile in flexibility (creating various types of ideas).

Dr. Guzik expressed satisfaction that some of his own University of Montana students also ranked in the top 1% for creativity. However, ChatGPT outperformed the majority of college students nationwide.

The study, which took place during the spring semester, was supported by Christian Gilde from UM Western and Christian Byrge from Vilnius University. The researchers presented their findings at the Southern Oregon University Creativity Conference.

This study highlights the potential of AI to match human creativity and contribute to various fields that require creative thinking.
