AMD Releases Radeon GPU Detective for Post-Mortem Analysis of GPU Crashes

AMD has introduced a new GPU diagnostic tool called Radeon Gpu Detective. This tool is designed for post-mortem analysis of GPU crashes and is available as part of the Radeon Developer Tool Suite.

Radeon Gpu Detective aims to address the ongoing issue of GPU driver crashes, including problems like black screens that have persisted despite previous attempts to fix them. The tool currently supports the analysis of GPU crashes on Windows in Direct3D 12 applications and requires an RX 6000 series (RDNA 2) or RX 7000 series (RDNA 3) graphics card, along with the latest public AMD Radeon Adrenalin Software.

Developers can utilize the Radeon Developer Panel (RDP) to activate Crash Analysis mode before reproducing the crash. Once a crash occurs, the tool generates an analysis file that provides crucial details about the crash’s cause. This includes execution marker information indicating which render passes and draw calls were in progress during the crash. App developers can add custom markers using the AMD GPU Services library.

If the crash is attributed to a page fault, the analysis file will contain the offending virtual address and information about any resources, such as heaps, textures, and buffers, associated with that address. Additionally, a timeline of memory events related to the relevant resources, including create, destroy, and evict events, is provided.

Radeon GPU Detective is specifically available for RDNA2 and RDNA3 GPUs, catering to users with Radeon RX 6000/7000 cards. By enabling faster identification of issues through user analysis, AMD aims to enhance the reliability of their drivers.
