Western Digital Faces Lawsuit Over Allegedly Defective SSDs

Western Digital, the storage giant, has been sued by a California resident who claims that a solid state drive (SSD) he purchased from the company was defective. The complaint alleges that the Western Digital SanDisk 2TB Extreme Pro SSD, along with other models, suffered from an undisclosed flaw, resulting in drive failures and data loss since January 2023. The lawsuit aims to be certified as a class action, representing customers who have experienced similar device failures or data loss.

According to the complaint, the SSDs can break down in various ways, including randomly disconnecting from the host, leading to data not being saved correctly or file-system corruption. This makes the stored documents inaccessible and renders the SSDs worthless.

In May, Western Digital released a firmware update to address a connection issue with certain portable SSDs, however, the lawsuit claims that data loss still occurs even with the updated drives. The complaint also mentions a bug in the firmware released in July 2023, which can cause the drive to enter a read-only mode or become undetected by the computer.

The lawsuit alleges breach of contract, violation of consumer protection law, and misleading advertising, among other claims. It seeks damages, legal costs, and other relief. Western Digital has not yet commented on the lawsuit.
